CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – In the first meeting since 1985, Western Illinois (0-13) fell to Austin Peay (7-10, 1-2) 10-1 in a midweek tilt on Wednesday (March 11).
The Governors jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a solo shot from the leadoff spot. A great tag from Jayden Gibson saved a run for the Leathernecks as the opposition attempted a double steal.
Johnny Beck relieved Parker Heidorf (0-1) in his first career start in the second and inherited the bases loaded. The southpaw struck out three in 2.2 innings of work in his fifth appearance of the season.
Austin Peay stayed pesky at the plate and tallied three straight frames with a run along with a two-run second and four-run eighth.
Chase VanDerGinst poked his second hit of the game that turned to an RBI single from Toby Allred that ended the shutout and made ti 5-1. A four-pitch walk brought the tying run to the plate, but a diving play up the middle robbed the liner from Grant Hannant in the sixth.
Baseball resumes at Alfred D. Boyer for Western Illinois in the home opener on Friday (March 13), and the kick-off of Summit League play against Purdue Fort Wayne in a three-game series.
