SIOUX FALLS, S.D.- Wyatt Spier and Cameron Karney earned spots on the Summit League All-Academic team as Western Illinois was the only institution with multiple All-Academic honorees. The Summit League announced the All-Academic team Wednesday (May 20) voted on by league sports information directors and faculty athletic representatives.
Spier is a marketing major with a 3.73 cumulative grade point average and graduated with his bachelor’s degree in the fall. He is currently pursuing a master’s degree at Western Illinois.
In competition, the Babson Park, Fla., native played 21 rounds while averaging 77.48 per round. Spier shot a career-low round of 67 while earning medalist honors at the Alabama State Spring Kickoff (68-70-67-205). His 54-hole score of 205 (-11) tied for second-lowest in program history en route to Summit League Golfer of the Week honors.
Karney is a finance major with a 3.74 cumulative grade point average. In competition, the Crystal Lake, Ill, native played in 21 rounds and averaged a career-low 75.19 per round.
The sophomore fired two rounds under par and battled for a tie for fourth place at the Zach Johnson Invitational (75-75-68-218). Karney tied for ninth place at the Alabama State Spring Kickoff (73-72-73-218) and put together his third ‘Top-10’ finish of the year at the Benbow Invitational (75-77-152).
To be eligible for the Summit League All-Academic team, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 or higher on a scale of 4.00 and have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution.
