Day two of Middle Tennessee State’s hosted spring tournament began satisfyingly for Western Illinois softball (9-11). After dropping a 15-3 decision versus Mercer on Saturday, the Leathernecks bounced back to defeat the Bears 9-2 in Sunday’s (3/21) first test. It was the Sydney Hollings show during those two hours, as the fifth-year displayed an exceptional batting performance. Western visits Missouri on Wednesday (March 24) for a late afternoon doubleheader. It will be a final contest before Summit League play begins that weekend.
The Western Illinois women’s soccer team is leaving Tulsa with a pair of wins after sweeping Oral Roberts on its home turf Friday (March 19) and Sunday (March 21). The opener finished in a 1-0 shutout and the finale, 2-1. Next up, the Leathernecks head to Omaha April 2 and April 4 for their final regular-season road series. The matches are scheduled for 7 p.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
Motivated from its first win of the year on Friday night (March 19), Western Illinois volleyball turned in an even more exhilarating team performance 24 hours later. Tested against the North Dakota Fighting Hawks once again, the Leathernecks stepped up to a challenging five-set outing. A back-to-back win and Summit League series sweep. WIU took the 3-2 win (23-25, 25-9, 19-25, 25-21, 15-12) and essentially outdueled UND in every major category – points, kills, aces, blocks, assists, and digs. One final week of the league’s regular-season remains for WIU. The Leathernecks are back in Western Hall on March 26-27 to host the South Dakota Coyotes.
Early afternoon games made up Saturday afternoon for Western Illinois softball (8-10), as the crew began its two-day participation in Middle Tennessee State’s tournament. Although matchups versus Mercer and the host resulted in losses for the Leathernecks, their batting pen had a few impressive moments. Western lost 15-3 to Mercer and 3-2 to MTSU.
