SIOUX FALLS, S.D.- Abby Carlin and Ashley Minyard were both selected to the Summit League Academic All-League Team; the league announced Wednesday (May 27). The two selections from Western Illinois softball were the only two players on the Academic All-League Team with a perfect 4.00 cumulative grade point average.
The honor marks the first Academic All-League team selection for both Carlin and Minyard.
Carlin earned her 4.00 G.P.A. as a chemistry major. In competition, the Huxley, Iowa, native appeared in 11 games in the circle, including nine starts.
The left-handed pitcher collected a 3-5 record with a 2.01 ERA over 62.2 innings while striking out 42 batters and only walking seven. She struck out a career-high 14 batters in a 6-2 win over DePaul on March 6 and pitched eight innings with five strikeouts to earn the win against Grand Canyon on Feb. 16.
Minyard is majoring in Biology/Medical Sciences with a 4.00 cumulative grade point average. She started all 19 games during the abbreviated 2020 season.
The junior outfielder recorded 11 hits and drove in five runs while cranking a career-high four doubles. The Milan, Ill., native notched her first career triple in a win versus DePaul on March 8 and went 2-for-4 at the plate with a pair of doubles in a 10-9 victory over Northern Illinois (Feb. 29).
To be eligible for the Summit League Academic All-League Team, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 or higher on a scale of 4.00 and have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution. Nominated athletes are voted on by league sports information directors and faculty athletic representatives.
