Iowa lawmakers look to increase animal cruelty penalties

Individuals who purposefully neglect or injure animals would be subject to more stringent penalties under a bill passed overwhelmingly Wednesday in the Iowa Senate.

The measure would make animal cruelty an aggravated misdemeanor punishable by up to two years in prison.

The Senate bill is a compromise on legislation that passed in the House in 2019 that would have made the penalties even stricter.

The House must pass the proposed legislation before it can be sent to the governor’s desk.
