This past Sunday at approximately 6:30pm, Sterling Police were dispatched to a car versus motorcycle accident at the intersection of West 4th Street and East Avenue, in Sterling.
An eastbound pickup truck driven by Clifford A. Collins, 41, of Sterling had reduced speed to make a left turn from West 4th Street onto East Avenue. A second eastbound vehicle, traveling directly behind the Collin‘s vehicle, was driven by a 17 year old male of Sterling, failed to yield to Collin‘s stopped vehicle.
The 17 year old swerved around the Collins vehicle into the oncoming, westbound lane of West 4th Street. That vehicle, driven by the 17 year old male then struck a westbound motorcycle being driven by Terry L. Jones II, 33, of Sterling. Jones was ejected from the motorcycle and came to rest in the ditch to the north of the intersection. Another westbound vehicle traveling directly behind Jones, being driven by Tammy L. Williams, 49, of Sterling, had to swerve to avoid striking Jones or his motorcycle, with Williams ending up the ditch.
Another motorist stopped, and with Sterling PD rendered medical aid to Jones on scene and he was then transported to CGH Medical Center by CGH EMS. Jones died as a result of his injuries a short time after arrival at CGH. None of the other parties involved in the accident sustained injury. The 17 year old male was cited for No Valid Driver’s License and later released to a parent.
An Accident Reconstructionist from the Illinois State Police was requested to assist Sterling Police with the investigation. Also at the scene, Sterling Fire Department, Rock Falls Fire Department, and Slim and Hank‘s Auto body.
The investigation is ongoing, and further charges are expected. All charges are allegations at this time and all parties are presumed innocent of all charges until proven guilty.
