Joe Biden won the Illinois Democratic Primary defeating Senator Bernie Sanders on Tuesday. According to numbers from the Illinois Board of Elections, Biden won with 59% of the vote on Tuesday. Bernie Sanders received 36% of the vote. Republicans in the 17th District chose Esther Joy King over Bill Fawell to challenge Cheri Bustos in November. A young lawyer and former member of the military, King won with 65% of the Republican Primary vote to Fawell’s 35%.
Also on Tuesday, Mark Curran won the Republican Primary and will face off against Senator Dick Durbin in November. Curran received 42% of the vote and was followed by Peggy Hubbard with 23% of the vote.
Rock Island County voted No on a 1% sales tax increase on Tuesday. Despite a struggling County budget voters in Rock Island rejected the 1 cent Public Safety tax by a margin of 69% to 31%.
In a vote that was nearly too close to call, Coal Valley approved a trio of referendums on Tuesday. One places a tax on the Coal Valley Fire Department Ambulance Service. Another will help pay for new Fire Department equipment. And one referendum will help raise funds for the Coal Valley Fire Department.
