Congresswoman Cheri Bustos followed President Biden’s Wednesday night address with a statement in response. With Representative Bustos at the event was Laraine Bryson, CEO of Tri-County Urban League in Peoria’s 61605 ZIP code, to highlight the American Rescue Plan’s investment in child care services and thank Bryson for her decades of service to the community.
“This evening, President Biden laid out his vision for our nation – good jobs, good schools, affordable housing, clean air and water, true equity and equality for each of our communities, protections for women against violence and better opportunities for every American. He invited debate on how we can deliver on each of these for the American people, and then he told us to get to work.
“Our next steps must aim at rebuilding our infrastructure, ensuring our farmers play a role in combatting the climate crisis, expanding rural broadband and putting forward a “blue-collar blueprint” to rebuild our nation.
“It’s clear more must be done to strengthen our foundations – our roads and bridges as well as the infrastructure of our families. To truly rebuild our economy, we must invest in child care to help parents return to the workforce and provide our children with a strong foundation. That’s why I was proud to have a local champion of this issue, Laraine Bryson, as my virtual guest for tonight’s speech to bring her decades of service to Washington. I applaud President Biden for speaking directly about the need to invest in child care services and providers and make it more affordable for working families. The status quo is unacceptable. The time for action is now.
“Tonight, President Biden asked everyone in our nation for just one thing – to come together and do our part. And I stand ready to work with the President on these critical issues to better the lives of hardworking families across our corner of Illinois.”
