Princeton News Brief: Mississipi Man Arrested on LaSalle County Warrant

Authorities in Mississippi arrested a man wanted out of LaSalle County, Illinois. The U.S. Marshal’s Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force, Gulfport Division arrested 52-year-old Lawrence Baker in Ocean Springs, Mississippi Tuesday morning. He faces aggravated criminal sexual abuse, which stemmed from an alleged 2006 incident involving a juvenile between the ages of 13 and 17.

A man suspected of kidnapping a young woman in Peru has a reported history of violence. Police say 27-year-old Bobby Cross has at least one violent conviction on his record. He is wanted in LaSalle County for failure to appear on a battery charge. Call Peru police if you have any information. The victim has since been found and is home safe.

Illinois became the latest state to make Juneteenth an official state holiday. Governor J.B. Pritzker signed a measure Wednesday near a rare, signed copy of the Emancipation Proclamation. The new law making June 19th a paid holiday for state employees and public school educators takes effect next year. However, under Illinois law Juneteenth will be a paid holiday only if it falls on a weekday.
