SRC Outreach offers class on Understanding Racial Injustice

Spoon River College Outreach is offering a class called Blinded by the White: Understanding Racial Injustice on Tuesday, October 27th from 5-8pm at the Macomb Spoon River College Outreach Center. This class is instructed by Michael Maher.

This course will focus on understanding the historical origin and creation of the concept of race, the impact of race historically, and how this history has created institutionalized forms of racial discrimination, inequality, and injustice. After a brief introduction to the concept of “race,” the class will watch the video “White Like Me: Race, Racism, and White Privilege in America” by anti-racism educator Tim Wise. This will be followed by an hour long discussion of the video.

Michael has taught Sociology at Spoon River College for 23 years. He teaches Introduction to Sociology every semester, and he periodically teaches Introduction to Cultural Anthropology, Contemporary Social Problems, Racial & Ethnic Relations, and The Sociology of Sex & Gender. He is passionate about Sociology and the issues that Sociology studies.
