Ben Gibbard has shared a tribute to the late Fountains of Wayne bassist and songwriter Adam Schlesinger, who died earlier this week at 52 from COVID-19 coronavirus complications.
During his daily livestream, the Death Cab for Cutie frontman shared that while he never got to meet Schlesinger, he was grateful to him for helping put the Gibbard-penned song “Me & Magdalena” on the 2016 Monkees album Good Times!, which Schlesinger produced.
“From the bottom of my heart, I am so grateful to him for helping me realize a lifelong dream, which was to write a song that would be recorded by The Monkees, a band that I grew up listening to,” Gibbard said.
Gibbard then performed a cover of the Fountains of Wayne song “Barbara H.,” originally off the group’s 1996 self-titled debut album.
You can watch the cover, and all of Gibbard’s live streams, now on YouTube.
