Lauv’s debut album ~how i’m feeling~ is finally here, and it features a whopping 21 songs. But while those songs charts his journey through anxiety, depression and coming out the other side, he says you don’t have to listen to it from start to finish to understand it.
“I think it’s O.K. if people dip in and out. I mean, for me, there’s certain tracks that are really emotionally important to me, like ‘Drugs and the Internet,’ ‘Changes,’ ‘Modern Loneliness,’ he tells ABC Audio. “But other than that, there’s a lot of different vibes and ups and downs that are not necessarily sequential.”
Those “different vibes” are the whole point of the album: Lauv sees it as his chance to finally show that he’s more than just the “I Like Me Better” guy.
“Before, I felt very boxed into this like ‘hopeless romantic’ identity, which is a big part of who I am, but not everything,” he explains. “And so this album was about breaking that and being kind of limitless, and being whoever you feel like you want to be on a given day.”
In addition to challenging him artistically, Lauv says writing ~how i’m feeling~ helped him get through his depression almost as much as therapy and medication did.
“I feel like they helped me understand exactly what was happening in my life at the time,” he notes, adding, “Songwriting is my way to tap into that thing you’re not really even conscious of, that’s hard to admit to yourself.”
~how i’m feeling~ features contributions from Troye Sivan, Alessia Cara, BTS and more — though Lauv says none of them were planned.
“I don’t know, they just kind of all naturally happened,” he laughs. “Which is really cool.”
